Getting a root canal soon. Was prescribed meds. Are they for now or after the root canal?

Just went to a new dentist a few days ago and confirmed I need a root canal. My schedule was unclear so I haven't made an appointment for it yet, but I will on Monday morning.

While I was in the office I was prescribed antibiotics and pain meds. Are those for me to take between now and the root canal? Or are those for after the root canal? It didn't even occur to me to ask, and they certainly didn't give me any instructions. The front desk lady implied both were for immediate use, but now I'm afraid to take the pain meds in case they're intended for after the surgery. And I immediately started taking the antibiotics, because I have never not done that. Hope I did not just screw everything up.

I'm certainly going to confirm on Monday, but you know it's Saturday night and I'm hurting now. I was only prescribed six pills for pain, so if I need to save those for after the root canal, I will. But it sure would be nice to go to sleep without a throbbing face.

Also, how miserable am I going to be during and after the root canal? I'm hoping to do it on a Friday so I have the weekend to recover, but that may not be an option and I have to figure out if I can work the day after or not. I'll look that up on the Internet now, but if anybody wants to share personal experience, please proceed.

I have a lot of dental work ahead of me to fix some weird things my last dentist did, so y'all may see me in here another time or two before it's all over.
