I think my crown is too big. What do I do?

Underwent a root canal last week, and went back for the crown today. Immediately, it didn't feel right, and my dentist made several attempts to get it right. After a while, he began to worry that continuing to work with it would run down the porcelain to the metal. I was pretty numbed up as he decided to perform a filling (or 4) while he was already at it. So he suggested that I wait for the numbness to wear off, and see how it felt after a day or two. Well, it's been about an hour since the numbness went away, and I'm ready for some food. First bite, and it is beyond uncomfortable. It's preventing any of my other teeth from connecting without me altering my jaw. And it feels like I'm just biting into a rock. Is this normal, and I'm just not used to porcelain in my mouth, or do I have a real issue?
